Closer Watch

Philadelphia -- Jonathan Papelbon was reinstated from his seven-game suspension Tuesday, which was handed down after he made a lewd gesture after a Sept. 14 appearance. He'll likely reclaim the closer's gig immediately and see any save opportunities that come about the rest of the way, with Ken Giles and Jake Diekman moving back to middle relief. Giles successfully converted the lone save opportunity that was available for the Phillies during Papelbon's absence.

T.J. House, SP, CLE -- Carlos Carrasco has deservedly captured most of the attention for his unexpected breakthrough over the last several weeks, but House's emergence has also been quite essential in allowing the Indians to hang on the periphery of the American League Wild Card race. Over his last four turns, House has given up a total of four runs over 26 innings, striking out 25 batters and walking just two during that span. Each of those four turns have come against the light-hitting offenses of the AL Central (two vs. the Twins, one each against the White Sox and Royals), but House should benefit again from another soft landing spot for his final start of the season. He's tentatively scheduled to take the hill Friday against the Rays, who rank 21st in the MLB in OPS against left-handers this season. House's production over the last month probably isn't indicative of his true talent level, but thanks to a favorable schedule, he figures to end the season on a high note and enter 2015 on sturdy ground for a rotation spot.
