Yahoo DFS Baseball: Tuesday Picks

Yahoo DFS Baseball: Tuesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

There is only one day game Tuesday, leaving us with 14 games to choose from for the main evening slate on Yahoo. There are some really intriguing matchups among the group, including the Indians hosting the Astros and the Red Sox taking on the Rays. Let's try to add to the excitement by winning some cash.

Pitching Overview

We could be in for a pitcher's duel with Justin Verlander ($58) facing off against Shane Bieber ($53). As impressive as Bieber has been, it's tough to feel confident about him versus the Astros' potent lineup. The Indians have improved offensively, but Verlander still has plenty of potential. He's once again been a strikeout machine with his 32.8 percent strikeout rate and he's done a great job of limiting base runners with his 0.84 WHIP.

Working our way towards the cheaper options brings us to Griffin Canning ($42), who has struggled to the tune of a 5.15 ERA and 4.82 FIP during his first taste of action in the big leagues. The good news is that he has a 1.23 WHIP and a 25.2 percent strikeout rate. His downfall has been the long ball with him allowing 1.7 HR/9. That might not be a problem here against the Tigers, who have hit the second-fewest home runs (95).

While the Indians will have to battle it out with the Astros, the team they are chasing for the AL Central lead in the Twins will be facing a much easier foe in the Marlins. They'll send Jake Odorizzi ($38) to the mound, who has been roughed up for 30 runs (29 earned) across 32.2 innings in his last seven starts. The fact that he still has a respectable 3.84 ERA and 4.03 FIP shows how well he was pitching before this terrible stretch. If there was ever an opportune time for him to get back on track, it's here with the Marlins scoring the second-fewest runs (378) in baseball.

Key Values/Chalk

When it comes to chalk, the Rockies playing at Coors Field is usually a popular choice. They will be taking on the Dodgers, who now have a hole in their rotation with Ross Stripling (biceps) on the IL. Julio Urias will take his place, but he's only topped 50 pitches one time over his last 19 appearances, so he doesn't figure to log a ton of work. Nolan Arenado ($18) and Trevor Story ($21) should be included in a lot of entries considering they have a .406 wOBA and a .370 wOBA, respectively, versus left-handed pitchers.

Staying in that same game, the Dodgers will have a chance to score in bunches against Kyle Freeland. While he was impressive in his last start against the Nationals, his struggles this season have left him with a 5.82 FIP and a 1.58 WHIP. Right-handed batters Justin Turner ($23) and A.J. Pollock ($15) figure to be included in plenty of entries, and rightfully so. Pollock has really shined with a 155 wRC+ against southpaws.

The Yankees still have a sizeable lead atop the AL East, but their starting rotation has hit a rough patch. The struggling J.A. Happ will be on the mound against the Diamondbacks, who have the fifth-highest wRC+ (112) against lefties. This could be another rough night for him, especially when it comes to Ketel Marte ($19), who has .407 wOBA versus southpaws. Eduardo Escobar ($19) will also likely be a highly-desirable option for anyone deploying a Diamondbacks stack.

Stacks

Angels vs. Drew VerHagen (Tigers)

Mike Trout (OF - $26), Shohei Ohtani (OF - $18), David Fletcher (3B - $17)

After failing to take advantage of a juicy matchup against Jordan Zimmermann on Monday, the Angels will look to rebound against VerHagen. In his first start back from the minors, the Mariners hit him hard for seven runs (six earned) over four innings. Ohtani has been slumping a bit, but he and Trout create a duo with tremendous power upside. Fletcher has also proven to be a tough out, drawing as many walks (36) as he has strikeouts.

Yankees vs. Taylor Clarke (Diamondbacks)

Aaron Judge (OF - $19), Aaron Hicks (OF - $19), Didi Gregorius (SS - $19)

This could end up being a rough night for Clarke, who has a 6.10 ERA and a 6.33 FIP. His problem has been keeping hitters inside the ballpark since he's allowed 2.3 HR/9. That's a recipe for disaster against Judge, who has a staggering .663 career slugging percentage at Yankee Stadium. Hicks has a .361 wOBA versus right-handed hitters and Gregorius is 15-for-39 (.385) with two home runs and five doubles over his last 10 games.

Blue Jays vs. Mike Montgomery (Royals)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (3B - $17), Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (OF - $19), Teoscar Hernandez (OF - $17)

Montgomery actually pitched well his last time out against the Indians, allowing one run over five innings. However, he didn't record a strikeout and has just a 12.3 percent strikeout rate for the season, overall. Add in his 6.40 FIP and he's still someone to consider stacking against. Guerrero looks to be hitting his stride after going 15-for-38 (.395) with two home runs and three doubles over his last 10 games. Hernandez has also started to turn things around by hitting seven home runs and two doubles over his last 12 contests.
