2017 Fantasy Outlook
Cervenka found himself pitching for the independent league Sugar Land Skeeters in 2015 after six years in the Red Sox and Cubs' system, but soon made his way back to affiliated ball through a minor league deal with the Braves. He made the majors a year later and impressed as a left-handed specialist who held left-handed batters to a .200/.306/.318 line in 2016. His numbers were solid enough that the Marlins acquired him at midseason to bolster their bullpen. This has all been accomplished with a slider Cervenka threw for more than 50 percent of his big league pitches, backed up by a low 90s fastball and occasional curveball. Control remains a major concern though, considering he walked 15.4 percent of batters (5.8 K/9) during his rookie season. That isn't too much of a surprise considering his slider-heavy arsenal, but it does represent the next step Cervenka needs to take if he wants to stick in a major league bullpen long term.
