Slegers announced his retirement from baseball Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Slegers noted that a nagging shoulder injury -- which limited him to just two rehab appearances in 2022 -- is the reason behind his decision. The 30-year-old finishes his career with a 5.46 ERA over 49 appearances -- six starts -- across parts of five major-league seasons.

Tampa Bay seems to have a love-hate relationship with the 6-foot-10 Slegers. After acquiring him via trade with the Twins in March of 2019, the Rays designated him for assignment a couple months later. Slegers was then added back to the Rays' roster in August of 2019 before being designated for assignment a second time that September. Despite all that, he re-signed with the Rays on a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training, ultimately getting called up Aug. 12. Slegers continued to bounce between the majors and the alternate site but eventually settled in and pitched well, posting a 2.81 ERA in 16 September innings. Slegers even took the ball three times in the postseason, although he was left off the World Series roster. At press time, Slegers remains on the Rays' 40-man roster. A lot of the horses in front of him would need to go down for Slegers to lead the stable.
The 2013 fifth-round draft pick was never considered much of a prospect due to his mediocre minor league numbers. However, a strong season at Triple-A in 2017 that saw him post his best strikeout rate since rookie ball (7.2 K/9) along with improved control led to a late season promotion to the majors. He struggled in four outings with the Twins (6.46 ERA) but his improvement in the minors suggests he could be a late bloomer at age 25. He'll compete for the fifth starter role this spring, but more likely begins the season in the Triple-A rotation.
