ANALYSIS
Yacabonis struggled with Baltimore throughout the 2019 campaign, accruing a 6.80 ERA and 1.83 WHIP with a 33:24 K:BB over 41 innings. He'll get a fresh start in San Diego, though he'll have to earn his way back to the big leagues.

Stat Review
How does Jimmy Yacabonis compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
Yacabonis bounced between Triple-A Norfolk and Baltimore four times before the All-Star break and six times in total before he settled in for good in September. The results were ugly and the peripherals were completely uninspiring, with Yacabonis posting just an 8.5 K-BB% and allowing eight homers in his 40 innings with the major-league team (1.80 HR/9). Mostly a two-pitch guy, Yacabonis' future is almost certainly in the bullpen, though he was actually worse in relief last season (6.94 ERA). He struggled with runners on base, which suggests Yacabonis has some issues pitching out of the stretch that he needs to iron out. Regardless, he figures to fill a similar role again in 2019, moving from starting to relief as needed. The O's are desperate for arms to chew up innings.
The 25-year-old righty has one of the better arms in Baltimore's system, but Yacabonis' 2017 season was a study in velocity being just one part of a successful pitcher's arsenal. Yacabonis was able to use his 95 mph fastball to overpower batters at Triple-A Norfolk, notching a 0.90 ERA to go with a 1.03 WHIP to earn his first callup to the majors. There were signs that Yacabonis would not have a smooth transition, however, and indeed he did not. His K/9 at Triple-A was already low for a high-velocity pitcher (7.1), and Yacabonis' inability to miss bats became glaring upon his promotion. He also struggled mightily with walks. Yacabonis stands a strong chance to break camp with the Orioles, but Baltimore's depth in terms of proven high-leverage options will likely result in him seeing a middle-relief role with very little chance to contribute in saves.
