2024 Fantasy Outlook
Diaz was called up by Oakland in mid-April and had a .656 OPS in 24 games before being demoted a month later, and he then rejoined the A's in late June. The 23-year-old didn't perform any better the rest of the way with a .222/.281/.350 slash line over 66 contests. He was a decent defender at second base but saw more of his time at the hot corner (38 appearances), where he struggled with negative-11 DRS. Diaz had an .857 OPS at Triple-A during his monthlong stint on the farm and has little else to prove in the minors, but his .225 xBA and .369 xSLG don't paint a rosy picture. He'll likely need to show some improvements early in 2024 in order to retain a spot on the big-league roster given his 79 wRC+ through 105 MLB games. Read Past Outlooks

May need to work on conditioning
Diaz, who received a demotion to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday after a very slow start to spring, may need to improve his conditioning in order to earn a call back up to the big-league club, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Diaz started 37 games at third base last season, but that didn't earn him enough capital to offset an .083 average across 10 Cactus League games to open spring training. The Athletics also have some viable contenders for the starting role at the hot corner, including Darell Hernaiz and Abraham Toro. As such, Diaz may have an uphill battle in the short term to log big-league at-bats, but getting into better condition will help his chances. "He's a kid that is working on certain things and understanding where he needs to be physically," manager Mark Kotsay said. "Getting to that place will help him not just this year, but for his future, too."

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Off to hot start
Diaz is 10-for-27 in his first nine starts for the Athletics since being called up September 18.
ANALYSIS
Diaz has been given the chance to play every day and has made the most of the opportunity, producing a .370/.393/.444 slash line and recording a hit in seven of his nine games. The 22-year-old has yet to hit a homer in the majors but showed his power between Double-A and Triple-A this year by knocking 19 long balls in 120 games and compiling a .515 SLG. He'll have the last six days of the season to continue making his case to be on the 2023 Opening Day roster.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
In most organizations, a player with Diaz's limited physical tools and defensive utility would be an afterthought in fantasy. However, as one of the best pure hitters in an Oakland system that is severely lacking in young big-league-ready position players, he is worth taking a look at. It's kind of a Jose Miranda type of profile. Diaz got more starts at designated hitter than anywhere else in the minors last year while playing more at the keystone in the majors, which is where he will be eligible in fantasy entering the year. He hit .326/.366/.515 with a 14.4 K% and 5.3 BB% as a 21-year-old across Double-A and Triple-A. Diaz's Triple-A output is greatly helped by the hitter-friendly conditions of the Pacific Coast League, but his contact skill immediately translated in the majors (13.7 K%). Obviously he is better in AVG leagues than OBP leagues, and there is no speed to speak of, but Diaz should play a lot for the A's this season as long as he hits for a modicum of power.
