My NFBC Team

By popular request, and by that I mean one person, here's my 15-team NFBC team:

.12 Carlos Gonzalez - outsmarted myself asking for the 13th or 12th pick and intending to take Hanley Ramirez who went 11th. In fact, eight picks into the draft Jose Bautista, Ryan Braun and Ramirez were still in my queue. All three went, and I actually had to think about my first pick for 30 seconds. I went with the player I think has the most upside across five categories.

.4 Curtis Granderson - so much for my positional scarcity plan of Ramirez and either Ian Kinsler or Dustin Pedroia who were both gone. It came down to Granderson or Giancarlo Stanton, and I went with the four-category guy over the three. Gave brief consideration to Jose Reyes, too.

.12 David Wright keeps falling to the late third, and I'll take another 20-20-plus guy there. Lots of homers and steals through three rounds.

.4 Felix Hernandez - I can never seem to get Tim Lincecum, so I always settle for the King. Not a bad consolation prize.

.12 Dee Gordon - It was either an elite catcher (two left were Matt Wieters and Joe Mauer) or Gordon who could hit .300 and steal 50-plus. I went with Gordon, figuring maybe one of the two catchers would be there on the way back Which they weren't as they went with the two picks right before me.

.4 Stephen Strasburg - The position scarcity plays weren't falling to me, so why not go with the best player available. Teaming Strasburg with the King atop my rotation.

.12 Jason Heyward - If healthy, 25-30 HR and 10 SB shouldn't be a problem.

.4 Heath Bell - This a no trade league, so you better draft some saves. Bell isn't the best closer, but with a 3-year, $27 deal, he's among the very safest.

.12 Derek Jeter - I still think he has a .290-plus year in him with close to 100 runs and 15 steals. With Heyward, Granderson and Wright, I wanted to bolster the Cargo/Gordon batting average play a bit.

.4 Joe Nathan - Closers were flying off the board, and again I went with an established guy who happened to sign a pricey two-year deal.

.12 Geovany Soto - the elite catchers were gone, and I missed out on Miguel Montero in Round 7 when I took Heyward. I wanted at least some pop from the position.

.4 Jeremy Hellickson - Strasburg and Hernandez is a good start, but I wanted pitching depth to stream two-start starters and capture a breakout or two. Hellickson's certainly a candidate.

.12 Anibal Sanchez - you have to have Ks in a mixed league, and Sanchez simply needs to stay healthy to be a top-30 starter.

.4 Adam Dunn - his power and batting eye looked restored this spring, and I had waited forever on 1B and CI.

.12 Justin Smoak - Another player I think has a good chance to break out this year.

.4 Alex Rios - Another last year's bum with a starting job and a good park in which to hit.

.12 Tim Hudson - Only out a few weeks, Hudson is a reliable source of wins and ERA.

.4 Bryan LaHair - Unquestioned starter at first base right now in Chicago - destroyed the high minors in his late-20s.

.12 Mark Buehrle - I can't imagine him not winning 13 or 14 games, not killing my ratios and maybe he'll see a small boost in Ks in the NL against unfamiliar hitters.

.4 Ted Lilly - sneaky source of good WHIP, steady veteran pitcher.

.12 Jeff Niemann - fifth starter in front of best defense in baseball, and great pitcher's park. Had two huge months in 2011 that showed his capabilities.

.4 Tyler Greene - waited long enough on 2B. That as of today he might not start in the opener is a bit troubling.

.12 Adam LaRoche - needed a UT, and LaRoche is the Nats' starting 1B.

.4 Josh Donaldson - waited long enough on a second catcher. Donaldson has the virtue of not actually having to play catcher, though he's battling to be the team's starting 3B.

.12 Rick Porcello - another breakout pitching candidate - wanted a deep staff for streaming.

.4 Brian Matusz - another upside pitching play.

.12 Danny Hultzen - why not?

.4 Alexi Casilla - before I knew he was banged up. Needed a backup for Greene.

.12 David DeJesus - simply chasing guaranteed at-bats for UT and backup OF purposes.

.4 Scott Rolen - see Dejesus, David.
