Friday NFL Training Camp Notes

Brandon Lloyd didn't catch a pass in the Patriots' preseason opener, but did line up with the first team offense in their limited action. Lloyd is basically the only true deep-threat receiver Tom Brady has ever had besides Randy Moss, and considering all the fun Brady had with Moss, Lloyd will help open up the offense and could be a real playmaker.

Mark Ingram (knee) missed Thursday's preseason game vs. New England, as he still recovers from offseason surgery. The rest is part of the Saints training camp plan for Ingram, and he is expected to play next Friday in the Saints' third preseason game. This will be the first big test for the former Heisman winner's knee, even if its only for a couple series.

Knowshon Moreno (knee) had a decent showing in the Broncos preseason opener, with five carries for 20 yards. The oft-injured Moreno continues to work his way back from a torn ACL, and is competing for carries with Lance Ball for the backup role. At the moment, Moreno's main goal is to avoid starting the season on the PUP list, which will partially determine how productive each of the Broncos' backs will be through the season's first six weeks.

Torrey Smith (ankle) could miss a couple of weeks, although the injury is considered minor. The Ravens will be cautious with Smith throughout training camp, as he provides a much needed deep threat for Joe Flacco. Smith should start the season as the Ravens second wideout, but keep an eye on newly acquired Jacoby Jones over the next couple weeks, who has a chance to snag a few targets from Smith this season.

Doug Martin looks like the favorite to win the Bucs' starting RB job to begin the season, at least according to Greg Schiano. The new head coach said it is "our plan" to bump the rookie ahead of incumbent LeGarrette Blount, who is still listed at first on the depth chart. Martin is clearly impressing in camp, and looks to be part of a potentially strong backfield in Tampa.
