Likely to start Saturday
October 27, 2020
Vanden Boom is expected to start at quarterback Saturday in Wisconsin's game against Nebraska, Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With 2019 starter Jack Coan (foot) out indefinitely and season-opening starter Graham Mertz and top backup Chase Wolf having both tested positive for COVID-19, Wisconsin is down to its fourth-string option at quarterback in Vanden Boom, the lone healthy scholarship player at the position. With a follow-up polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test having confirmed he's positive for coronavirus, Mertz is officially out for at least the next 21 days, while Wolf will face the same length of absence if his PCR test returns positive later this week. Barring good news on Wolf's second test, Vanden Boom, a redshirt junior, is the next man up. Vanden Boom will likely be needed to start at least two games beyond Week 9 while all three quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart are sidelined.
