Elite versus CCU
December 27, 2022
Ahlers completed 26 of 38 passes for 300 yards and five touchdowns and rushed seven times for 48 yards and a touchdown in Tuesday's 53-29 win over Coastal Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Ahlers was elite Tuesday, as he put together his fifth 300-yard game this season and accounted for six touchdowns, tying his season best. It was a great way for the senior to finish out his collegiate career, and put out one last showing ahead of the NFL Draft. Ahlers' current backup, Mason Garcia seems to be in line to start next season, unless a freshman or a transfer can come in and take the job from him.

Ahlers will enter his fifth season with the Pirates in a very different situation than the 2021 season. The senior quarterback threw for 3,126 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions (256-of-414) in 2021, but of the four receivers who broke 35 catches last season for East Carolina, three of them are not part of the program in 2022. Tyler Snead was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Steelers, CJ Johnson was suspended indefinitely from the program in February, and Audie Omotosho utilized his final year of eligibility in 2021. Ahlers will need to rely on a new set of receivers in 2022. Notable names looking to take on a large role with the program in 2022 include: incoming Georgia transfer Jaylen Johnson, who notched five catches for 49 yards in six games with the Bulldogs, and junior Jsi Hatfield, who tallied 15 catches for 294 yards and three touchdowns with the Pirates in 2021. East Carolina will retain workhorse running backs Keaton Mitchell and Rahjai Harris, along with tight end Ryan Jones (37 catches for 442 yards and five touchdowns in 2021), which should help smooth out the offensive efficiency in this transition period, but Ahlers will need to adapt in order to have success in 2022 with East Carolina.
Ahlers took major strides in his second year as a starter, as he improved from completing 48.3 percent of his passes to 59.7. Although, he also was a little more reckless with the ball, as he went from throwing only three interceptions to throwing 10. Granted, he also improved from 12 passing touchdowns to 21, and he added six more on the ground. All in all, we’ll call that an improvement. When you see Ahlers operating at his peak, like when he threw for 498 yards and six touchdowns on the road against SMU, it’s hard not to be excited about the potential in Ahlers’ arm heading into 2020.
Ahlers is the “You Don’t Want To See How The Sausage Gets Made” fantasy asset. During his stretch as the starter last season, he averaged the fifth-most fantasy points. That was despite posting a 50.6 completion rate and a 6.9 YPA. Rushing ability helped, but the major factor was volume as he averaged 46.2 passes per game. A red flag comes in the form of a new coaching staff that ran 68.4 plays per game last season. For a player as reliant on volume as Ahlers, an extreme play count reduction could expose his flaws and crater his value.
