October 5, 2020
Makekau announced Aug. 31 that he would opt out of the 2020 season, citing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, Robbie Weinstein of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Heading into the season, Makekau was the frontrunner to serve as Navy's starting slotback after he carried 30 times for 212 yards to go with five receptions for 175 yards and a touchdown as a junior in 2019. In Makekau's stead, Navy has leaned on CJ Williams and Myles Fells as their primary options at the position through the team's first three games. Makekau remains enrolled at the academy and is expected to return for his senior season in 2021.
