Shifts back to slot receiver
Groin
April 5, 2020
Texas coach Tom Herman said in February that Whittington (groin) would move from running back to slot receiver ahead of the 2020 season, Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman reports.
ANALYSIS
Due to greater depth concerns in the backfield, Texas converted Whittington from receiver to running back during his first season on campus. The true freshman was one of several backs to succumb to an injury, however, as he missed most of the season with a groin issue and ultimately took a redshirt after finishing with no rushing attempts and two receptions for 17 yards. With Keaontay Ingram and Roschon Johnson healthy again and blue-chip recruit Bijan Robinson also joining the backfield mix, Whittington will now move back to receiver as the Longhorns look to replace standout wideout Devin Duvernay in the slot. Jake Smith profiles as the leading candidate to take Duvernay's spot in the lineup, but Whittington should represent Smith's primary competition for that role. Whittington underwent surgery to address the lingering groin injury last December but should have no limitations when the Longhorns open fall camp.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
The true freshman received heavy praise in the spring from the coaching staff who envision Whittington being a capable back-up to Keaontay Ingram. Duel-threat quarterback Sam Ehlinger dealt with some injuries last season which leads to the team leaning on Ingram and Whittington to take the bulk of hits from defenders, so that Ehlinger can stay healthy. Whittington has sleeper fantasy potential if he can prove productive in the passing game in what should prove to be a much improved offense.
