Weekly Rankings: Week 2 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 2 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday Update complete.alt text

Here are my rankings (if you want a second opinion, please see our formula-based projections - these are not tied into my rankings at all) for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. ***Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.***

**** PLEASE READ: (On a quick aside - our research shows that even though PPR leagues are becoming more popular, standard scoring leagues still outpace them, and moreover there are more 1/2pt PPR leagues coming into play as leagues adjust to the higher passing environment in the NFL. Beyond that, it makes more sense to create PPR rankings for the Flex position, and extrapolate those across the individual positions than it does in reverse. You may choose to disagree, but my stance here is pretty inflexible.)****

Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings, roughly around 5:00 pm PT. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.***

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday.

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it. If there is no such note, that means it's my first pass at the rankings for this current week.

By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?". And then refer to the rankings again before asking a generic starting decision question. If you really desire a response to a starting question that doesn't have added complexity, please use our Ask An Expert service - it comes with your subscription. My response will correspond with the rankings.

Quarterback

1.Tom Brady NE at NO
2.Drew Brees NO vs. NE
Note: The Saints' final drive salvaged a miserable fantasy showing for Brees, who had trouble with the Vikings' pass rush, especially after Zach Strief got injured.
3.Aaron Rodgers GB at Atl
4.Matt Ryan ATL vs. GB
5.Jameis Winston TB vs. Chi
6.Derek Carr OAK vs. NYJ
7.Russell Wilson SEA vs. SF
8.*Cam Newton CAR vs. Buf
Note: Newton's timing appeared to be off against the Niners, leading to him badly missing a wide-open Ed Dickson on what would have been an easy touchdown. (Shoulder) Limited practice Thursday, described by coach Ron Rivera as 'the new normal.' ***Full participation in Friday's practice.***
9.Carson Palmer ARZ at Ind
Note: Looked horrible against the Lions, but draws a 'center-square' matchup against the Colts this week. How much will David Johnson's absence hurt the passing game?
10.Ben Roethlisberger PIT vs. Min
11.Jay Cutler MIA at LAC
12.Carson Wentz PHI at KC
13.Philip Rivers LAC vs. Mia
14.Tyrod Taylor BUF at Car
15.Marcus Mariota TEN at Jax
16.Trevor Siemian DEN vs. Dal
Note: Had his first NFL rushing touchdown Monday night, but was a good runner in college.
17.Matthew Stafford DET at NYG
18.Alex Smith KC vs. Phi
19.Jared Goff LA vs. Was
Note: When you're right, you're right - kudos to DieHardGiantsFan for talking up Goff last week.
20.Kirk Cousins WAS at LAR
Note: Awful preseason spilled over into an awful first regular season game.
21.Eli Manning NYG vs. Det
Note: It's clear that Beckham makes Eli look good, and not the other way around. This ranking presumes that Beckham will be back.
22.Dak Prescott DAL at Den
23.Joe Flacco BAL vs. Cle
24.Andy Dalton CIN vs. Hou
Note: Even though the Bengals' OL was a sieve, Dalton also earned his bad numbers - twice missing an underneath defender on INTs, another time chucking the ball through the end zone on 4th down. Thursday night might also be ugly.
25.Mike Glennon CHI at TB
26.DeShone Kizer CLE at Bal
27.*Blake Bortles JAC vs. Ten
Note: Lost in the glow of the Jags' victory was how mediocre Bortles was again, and now he doesn't have Robinson for the rest of the season. ***Listed on the injury report with a wrist injury, but expected to play.***
28.*Deshaun Watson HOU at Cin
Note: Dealing with an injured ankle, but expected to start Thursday against the Bengals after replacing Savage for the second half last week. He averaged only 4.4 yards per attempt and had two turnovers, so I'm not convinced that he's much of a short-term improvement. The Texans didn't do a grand announcement, but they are starting Watson this week.
29.*Jacoby Brissett IND vs. Ari
Note: Probably will start in Week 2 against Arizona, awaiting official word. The Colts are splitting first-team reps between Brissett and Tolzien and haven't officially named a starter. ***Appears in line to start.***
30.Case Keenum MIN at Pit
31.Josh McCown NYJ at Oak
32.Brian Hoyer SF at Sea
33.*Sam Bradford MIN at Pit
Note: (Knee) Limited participant in Thursday's practice. *** Needed an MRI for his knee, which is the same one that had a torn ACL in 2013. He's now a game-time decision. Case Keenum is the backup. DOWNGRADED TO DOUBTFUL, KEENUM WILL START***
34.*Scott Tolzien IND vs. Ari
Note: Likely ceding the position to Jacoby Brissett.
35.*Tom Savage HOU at Cin
Note: Benched at halftime, following a Bill O'Brien trend.
36.*Andrew Luck IND vs. Ari
Note: (Shoulder) Already ruled out for Week 2 against the Cardinals.

Running Backs

1.Ezekiel Elliott DAL at Den
Note: The NFL has appealed Elliott's injunction, but the resolution of that appeal is expected to take months.
2.Le'Veon Bell PIT vs. Min
3.Kareem Hunt KC vs. Phi
4.*LeSean McCoy BUF at Car
Note: Briefly left Week 1 with a wrist injury, which cost him a touchdown, and was vultured by Mike Tolbert on other snaps. But he appears to be fine for Week 2. Practiced Wednesday and said he'll be 'fine' for this week. ***Rested for Friday's practice, as he was dealing with a little bit of groin soreness, but he's not on the injury list.***
5.*Jay Ajayi MIA at LAC
Note: Listed on the injury report with a knee injury, but was a full participant in practice. ***Full practice all week, removed from the injury list.***
6.Ty Montgomery GB at Atl
7.Melvin Gordon LAC vs. Mia
8.Leonard Fournette JAC vs. Ten
9.Marshawn Lynch OAK vs. NYJ
10.Devonta Freeman ATL vs. GB
11.DeMarco Murray TEN at Jax
Note: I'm not sweating the small output in Week 1 - he was on the field for 47 snaps.
12.Todd Gurley LA vs. Was
Note: Happy to see the production in the passing game, worried about the 2.1 yards per carry.
13.Dalvin Cook MIN at Pit
14.Christian McCaffrey CAR vs. Buf
15.Mike Gillislee NE at NO
16.Jordan Howard CHI at TB
Note: Howard's late drop is just as big of a concern as Tarik Cohen's production in Week 1. (Shoulder) Limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. ***Limited again Friday, listed as questionable, but expected to play.***
17.Lamar Miller HOU at Cin
18.Mark Ingram NO vs. NE
19.C.J. Anderson DEN vs. Dal
20.Carlos Hyde SF at Sea
21.Jonathan Stewart CAR vs. Buf
22.Isaiah Crowell CLE at Bal
23.Jacquizz Rodgers TB vs. Chi
24.*Javorius Allen BAL vs. Cle
Note: Had more carries (21) and snaps (33) than Terrance West (20, 27 respectively) last week, and should continue to see heavy usage with Woodhead out.
25.Ameer Abdullah DET at NYG
Note: The good news - the Lions committed to Abdullah being the primary runner with 15 carries. The bad news - he netted just 30 yards, and Riddick was clearly the top receiving back.
26.Rob Kelley WAS at LAR
27.Terrance West BAL vs. Cle
28.James White NE at NO
29.Tarik Cohen CHI at TB
30.*Bilal Powell NYJ at Oak
Note: Nearly even timeshare with Forte - 30 snaps, compared to 35 for Forte.
31.*Kerwynn Williams ARZ at Ind
Note: Perhaps at the head of the Cardinals' RBBC with David Johnson out. Labeled as the starter, but Johnson will get carries and Ellington will be in the passing game.
32.LeGarrette Blount PHI at KC
33.*Darren Sproles PHI at KC
Note: ***Donnel Pumphrey went on IR this week with a hamstring injury, though given how he was a healthy scratch last week, it might not have a big impact on any of the Eagles' other backs.***
34.Chris Thompson WAS at LAR
Note: Looked great in the passing game and got 30 snaps, but also had just three carries.
35.*Shane Vereen NYG vs. Det
Note: Had nine catches on 10 targets over 31 snaps, though he didn't log a single carry.
36.*Duke Johnson CLE at Bal
Note: Johnson played almost exclusively as a slot receiver in Week 1, getting no carries. But coach Hue Jackson said that wouldn't necessarily be the case going forward.
37.Joe Mixon CIN vs. Hou
38.Tevin Coleman ATL vs. GB
39.Matt Forte NYJ at Oak
40.Frank Gore IND vs. Ari
41.*Thomas Rawls SEA vs. SF
Note: (Ankle) Held out for the Week 1 loss to the Packers, but coach Pete Carroll expects him back against the Niners. Full practice on Wednesday. ***Removed from the injury list.***
42.Theo Riddick DET at NYG
43.*Chris Carson SEA vs. SF
Note: Had more snaps (26) than Prosise (16) and Lacy (7), but Rawls could be back to further muddle the picture.
44.Giovani Bernard CIN vs. Hou
45.*Paul Perkins NYG vs. Det
Note: Saw just 17 snaps, compared to 31 for Shane Vereen, though Vereen didn't get any carries.
46.Alvin Kamara NO vs. NE
47.Jamaal Charles DEN vs. Dal
48.Jeremy Hill CIN vs. Hou
49.Adrian Peterson NO vs. NE
Note: Saw just nine snaps against the Vikings. It didn't help that the Saints were trailing the entire game.
50.C.J. Prosise SEA vs. SF
51.Derrick Henry TEN at Jax
52.Marlon Mack IND vs. Ari
53.*Andre Ellington ARZ at Ind
Note: Kerwynn Williams got more work after David Johnson's injury last week. Could be part of the mix this week, though the Cards also re-signed Chris Johnson. Was in on passing downs and in the two-minute drill last week against Detroit. I'm convinced he's the Cardinals' best pass-catching option out of the backfield.
54.*Rex Burkhead NE at NO
Note: ***Could line up as a receiver more often with Amendola out this week.***
55.Charcandrick West KC vs. Phi
56.Mike Tolbert BUF at Car
57.Wendell Smallwood PHI at KC
Note: Had 15 snaps in Week 1, compared to 33 for Sproles and 23 for Blount.
58.James Conner PIT vs. Min
59.Jalen Richard OAK vs. NYJ
60.Chris Ivory JAC vs. Ten
61.Charles Sims TB vs. Chi
62.Jerick McKinnon MIN at Pit
63.DeAndre Washington OAK vs. NYJ
64.*Eddie Lacy SEA vs. SF
Note: Had just seven snaps in the loss to the Packers. So much for the 'revenge game' potential (see also, Adrian Peterson). With Rawls back this week, it's possible that Lacy might even get scratched.
65.Jamaal Williams GB at Atl
66.Robert Turbin IND vs. Ari
67.Damien Williams MIA at LAC
68.Dion Lewis NE at NO
69.Tyler Ervin HOU at Cin
70.De'Angelo Henderson DEN vs. Dal
71.*Latavius Murray MIN at Pit
Note: Saw just three snaps (compared to 11 for McKinnon) as Cook's backup on Monday night.
72.Alfred Morris DAL at Den
Note: Was the backup ahead of McFadden last week, but managed just one yard on four carries.
73.Matt Breida SF at Sea
74.*D'Onta Foreman HOU at Cin
Note: Bill O'Brien said that Foreman would get more work on Thursday night after getting just two snaps and one carry against the Jaguars.
75.*Samaje Perine WAS at LAR
Note: Zero offensive snaps in Week 1. ***Referring to Perine's struggles in the first preseason game, coach Jay Gruden said - 'Yeah, we don't forget fumbles.'***
76.*Chris Johnson ARZ at Ind
Note: Re-signed by Arizona in the wake of the David Johnson injury, but looked like toast in the preseason.
77.*D.J. Foster ARZ at Ind
Note: Signed off the Patriots' practice squad.
78.*Darren McFadden DAL at Den
Note: Healthy inactive last week.
79.*T.J. Yeldon JAC vs. Ten
Note: (Hamstring) Full practice Wednesday.
80.*Danny Woodhead BAL vs. Cle
Note: (Hamstring) Out 4-to-6 weeks. Placed on IR - out for 8 weeks.

24.DeSean Jackson TB vs. Chi
25.Emmanuel Sanders DEN vs. Dal

Note: (Ankle) Another late game this week, making it difficult to start him. Finally diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain - or at least that diagnosis was finally made public. Described as a 6-to-8 week injury (that happened four weeks ago), but he's not been ruled out for Monday night. ***Officially a game-time decision, but trending towards playing.***

64.Taylor Gabriel ATL vs. GB
65.Marquise Goodwin SF at Sea

67.Breshad Perriman BAL vs. Cle
Note: I still love his talent, but it's pretty clear that the Ravens won't have much volume early on this season.
68.*Jaron Brown ARZ at Ind

Note: Had a whopping nine targets in Week 1's win over the Jets. (Shoulder) Full practice Thursday.
71.Rob Kelley WAS at LAR
72.Terrance West BAL vs. Cle
73.*Bilal Powell NYJ at Oak
Note: Nearly even timeshare with Forte - 30 snaps, compared to 35 for Forte.
74.*Kerwynn Williams ARZ at Ind
Note: Perhaps at the head of the Cardinals' RBBC with David Johnson out. Labeled as the starter, but Johnson will get carries and Ellington will be in the passing game.
75.*Darren Sproles PHI at KC
Note: ***Donnel Pumphrey went on IR this week with a hamstring injury, though given how he was a healthy scratch last week, it might not have a big impact on any of the Eagles' other backs.***
76.Chris Thompson WAS at LAR
Note: Looked great in the passing game and got 30 snaps, but also had just three carries.
77.*Shane Vereen NYG vs. Det
Note: Had nine catches on 10 targets over 31 snaps, though he didn't log a single carry.
78.*Duke Johnson CLE at Bal
Note: Johnson played almost exclusively as a slot receiver in Week 1, getting no carries. But coach Hue Jackson said that wouldn't necessarily be the case going forward.
79.Tevin Coleman ATL vs. GB
80.Joe Mixon CIN vs. Hou
81.Matt Forte NYJ at Oak
82.Theo Riddick DET at NYG
83.*Chris Carson SEA vs. SF

104.Austin Hooper ATL vs. GB
105.*Eric Decker TEN at Jax
Note: Had just three catches for 10 yards despite getting eight targets. He looked pretty slow compared to the other Tennessee receivers.

Note: Shut out on four targets last week despite Robinson getting hurt in the first quarter. Still, the most likely top target remaining.
107.Chris Hogan NE at NO
108.*Andre Ellington ARZ at Ind
Note: Kerwynn Williams got more work after David Johnson's injury last week. Could be part of the mix this week, though the Cards also re-signed Chris Johnson. Was in on passing downs and in the two-minute drill last week against Detroit. I'm convinced he's the Cardinals' best pass-catching option out of the backfield.
109.*Rex Burkhead NE at NO
Note: ***Could line up as a receiver more often with Amendola out this week.***
110.*J.J. Nelson ARZ at Ind
Note: ***Could get more targets this week with John Brown out.***
