Weekly Rankings: Week 8 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 8 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday update complete

Minnesota vs. Cleveland is in London, at 9:30 a.m. ET.

BYE WEEKS: Arizona, Green Bay, Jacksonville, L.A. Rams, New York Giants, Tennessee

Here are my rankings (if you want a second opinion, please see our formula-based projections - these are not tied into my rankings at all) for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. ***Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.***

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it. If there is no such note, that means it's my first pass at the rankings for this current week.

By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick.

Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?". And then refer to the rankings again before asking a generic starting decision question. If you really desire a response to a starting question that doesn't have added complexity, please use our Ask An Expert service - it comes with your subscription. My response will correspond with the rankings.

Quarterback

1.Tom Brady NE vs. LAC
Note: The Chargers are allowing just 185 passing yards per game, and 6.7 yards per attempt. But they've faced Trevor Siemian twice, the second time without Emmanuel Sanders, EJ Manuel, Eli Manning (with all of his receivers getting hurt in that game), and Jay Cutler in five of their seven games. Carson Wentz threw for 242 yards, and Alex Smith just 155 yards against them. This is a long-winded explanation of why Brady isn't at his customary top spot on the list. ***Forget the long-winded explanation! I'm moving Wentz and Prescott down some because of the weather - the reports I'm reading suggest it won't be as bad for Brady.***
2.*Cam Newton CAR at TB
Note: Full practice Thursday.
3.Philip Rivers LAC at NE
4.Drew Brees NO vs. Chi
Note: Two first-quarter interceptions made the win over the Packers a lot closer than it should have been. This week's home against the Bears looks tougher now than it did at the start of the season.
5.Carson Wentz PHI vs. SF
6.Dak Prescott DAL at Was
7.Tyrod Taylor BUF vs. Oak
8.Andy Dalton CIN vs. Ind
Note: Barely received time to throw, and made poor decisions in that haste.
9.*Jameis Winston TB vs. Car
Note: (Shoulder) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Limited again Thursday, full practice Friday.***
10.Russell Wilson SEA vs. Hou
11.*Kirk Cousins WAS vs. Dal
Note: ***Moving down because of the Redskins' offensive line woes.***
12.*Case Keenum MIN at Cle
Note: This could be a last hurrah for Keenum - the Vikings have a bye next week, and either Bradford or Bridgewater could be deemed ready by then. (Chest) Full-practice Thursday, meanwhile Sam Bradford hasn't started practicing yet.
13.Ben Roethlisberger PIT at Det
14.Derek Carr OAK at Buf
15.Matt Ryan ATL at NYJ
Note: The Pats failed to cure the Falcons' offensive woes. It's hard to put much faith in the Jets being able to help any further.
16.Alex Smith KC vs. Den
17.Josh McCown NYJ vs. Atl
18.*Trevor Siemian DEN at KC
Note: Broncos coach Vance Joseph said that Siemian wasn't in danger of losing his job - but as always, if they're asking the question, you know Siemian's on thin ice. Paxton Lynch (shoulder) participated in a 'very limited' jog-through Wednesday, but he isn't close to being an alternative.
19.*Matt Moore MIA at Bal
Note: Expected to start in place of the injured Jay Cutler. Moore started slowly (3-of-7 with an interception) before finishing 17-for-27, 209 yards and two touchdowns. ***Will return to the clipboard and headphones after Thursday night's stinker.***
20.Deshaun Watson HOU at Sea
Note: It'll be interesting to see what Watson can do against a significantly better defense, in a hostile defense.
21.C.J. Beathard SF at Phi
Note: Beathard's rushing touchdown cushioned the blow of an otherwise disappointing game against the Cowboys. His pocket presence is still developing, however - often he failed to detect the rush until it was well too late.
22.Joe Flacco BAL vs. Mia
23.*DeShone Kizer CLE vs. Min
Note: Benched mid-game (again), this time for Cody Kessler. The Browns are expected to name Kessler the starter this week for the early London game against the Vikings. Named the starter again this week.
24.Matthew Stafford DET vs. Pit
25.Mitchell Trubisky CHI at NO
26.Jacoby Brissett IND at Cin
Note: Sacked a whopping 10 times against the Jaguars, who rarely blitzed in the process.
27.*Cody Kessler CLE vs. Min
Note: Will be the backup behind Kizer again this week.
28.*Jay Cutler MIA at Bal
Note: Rib injury, already essentially ruled out for this week - did not suit up Tuesday. Officially ruled out Thursday, but expected to be available for Week 9.
29.*Sam Bradford MIN at Cle
Note: (Knee) Made the trip to London but isn't yet practicing. ***Officially ruled out.***
30.*Andrew Luck IND at Cin
Note: Limited to rehabbing activities this week, won't practice.

Running Backs

1.Le'Veon Bell PIT at Det
2.*Ezekiel Elliott DAL at Was
Note: The NFL's request for an expedited hearing was denied, so Elliott will play this week.
3.Jordan Howard CHI at NO
Note: The Saints are allowing 4.9 yards per carry so far - that would seem to fit the Bears' gameplan quite well.
4.LeSean McCoy BUF vs. Oak
5.Kareem Hunt KC vs. Den
Note: The Broncos allow just 3.0 yards per carry, tied for the lowest in the NFL with ... the Browns? Trivia aside, this is a bad matchup for Hunt, but at least he'll catch passes out of the backfield.
6.Devonta Freeman ATL at NYJ
7.Mark Ingram NO vs. Chi
8.*Melvin Gordon LAC at NE
Note: Limited practice Wednesday with a foot injury. ***Full practice Friday, will play Sunday against New England.***
9.*Jay Ajayi MIA at Bal
Note: Limited participant Monday due to knee and elbow issues, but had a full practice Tuesday. Still hasn't scored a touchdown all season. Full practice Wednesday, no longer on the injury list. I'm warming up to using him this week against a Baltimore team that's been vulnerable against the run all season.
10.LeGarrette Blount PHI vs. SF
Note: Couldn't get going against the Redskins, but this week's matchup against the Niners provides some relief.
11.Ameer Abdullah DET vs. Pit
12.Carlos Hyde SF at Phi
13.Dion Lewis NE vs. LAC
Note: Led the Patriots with 13 carries Sunday night, and the Pats could figure to run the ball frequently against the Chargers this week.
14.Christian McCaffrey CAR at TB
15.C.J. Anderson DEN at KC
16.Lamar Miller HOU at Sea
17.Joe Mixon CIN vs. Ind
Note: Just give him the damn ball already.
18.Doug Martin TB vs. Car
19.Alvin Kamara NO vs. Chi
20.Jerick McKinnon MIN at Cle
21.*Chris Thompson WAS vs. Dal
Note: Left for a while Monday night with a toe injury, but later returned.
22.Duke Johnson CLE vs. Min

25.*Jalen Richard OAK at Buf
Note: Will share the carries with DeAndre Washington with Lynch serving his one-game suspension.
26.James White NE vs. LAC
27.*Jonathan Stewart CAR at TB
Note: Limited Wednesday with a toe injury. ***Removed from the injury list Friday.***
28.Rob Kelley WAS vs. Dal
29.Wendell Smallwood PHI vs. SF
Note: (Knee) Returned to action Monday night and received significant action early, only to fade in the second half.
30.*Matt Forte NYJ vs. Atl
Note: ***(Toe) Full practice Friday - no longer on the injury list.***
31.*Tevin Coleman ATL at NYJ
Note: (Knee) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Full practice Friday, no longer on the injury list.***

37.Austin Ekeler LAC at NE
38.Theo Riddick DET vs. Pit
39.D'Onta Foreman HOU at Sea
40.Mike Gillislee NE vs. LAC
41.*DeAndre Washington OAK at Buf
Note: Will share the carries with Jalen Richard with Lynch serving his one-game suspension.
42.Eddie Lacy SEA vs. Hou
43.Jamaal Charles DEN at KC
44.Marlon Mack IND at Cin
45.Giovani Bernard CIN vs. Ind
46.Tarik Cohen CHI at NO
47.Elijah McGuire NYJ vs. Atl
48.Matt Breida SF at Phi
49.Mike Tolbert BUF vs. Oak
50.Devontae Booker DEN at KC
51.Corey Clement PHI vs. SF
52.*Charcandrick West KC vs. Den
Note: (Concussion) Likely to return on Monday night - the Chiefs re-re-re-released C.J. Spiller in anticipation of West's return. ***Full practice this week.***
53.Rex Burkhead NE vs. LAC
54.Jeremy Hill CIN vs. Ind
55.Alfred Morris DAL at Was
56.Damien Williams MIA at Bal
57.J.D. McKissic SEA vs. Hou
58.Kenyan Drake MIA at Bal
59.Charles Sims TB vs. Car
60.James Conner PIT at Det

62.*Samaje Perine WAS vs. Dal
Note: Didn't notch a single offensive snap Monday night.
63.Dwayne Washington DET vs. Pit
64.*Zach Zenner DET vs. Pit
Note: Dwayne Washington should return this week, pushing Zenner back to the inactive list.
65.*Benny Cunningham CHI at NO
Note: (Hamstring) Inactive last week. Limited in Wednesday's practice.
66.*Darren McFadden DAL at Was
Note: Healthy scratch again.
67.*C.J. Prosise SEA vs. Hou
Note: Aggravated his ankle injury in the win over the Giants. Didn't practice Wednesday. ***Listed as doubtful.***
68.*Terrance West BAL vs. Mia
Note: (Calf) Did not practice Tuesday - looks like he'll miss another game Thursday night. Officially ruled out again.
69.*Marshawn Lynch OAK at Buf
Note: One-game suspension upheld, will sit out this week.

Wide Receivers

1.Antonio Brown PIT at Det
2.A.J. Green CIN vs. Ind
3.Julio Jones ATL at NYJ
Note: The cynic approach - 'what took them so long to target him in the end zone like that?' The optimist approach - 'they finally targeted him in the end zone and it worked, maybe they'll do it again!'
4.Dez Bryant DAL at Was
5.Mike Evans TB vs. Car
6.Brandin Cooks NE vs. LAC
7.Kelvin Benjamin CAR at TB
8.Keenan Allen LAC at NE
9.Doug Baldwin SEA vs. Hou
10.Michael Crabtree OAK at Buf
11.*Michael Thomas NO vs. Chi
Note: Sat out practice Wednesday with a knee injury, but was present at the open portion of practice Thursday - officially a limited practice. Coach Sean Payton said that the injury isn't a long-term concern. ***Full practice Friday, removed from the injury list.***
12.Amari Cooper OAK at Buf
13.*Stefon Diggs MIN at Cle
Note: I'm still operating under the assumption that Diggs doesn't play until he practices in full. Full participant in practice Thursday. ***Officially active.***
14.Demaryius Thomas DEN at KC
Note: Had an 80-yard reception wiped out on a shaky OPI call.
15.Nelson Agholor PHI vs. SF
16.*Jarvis Landry MIA at Bal
Note: The NFL officially closed its investigation into Landry's domestic battery accusation.
17.Pierre Garcon SF at Phi

19.*Devin Funchess CAR at TB
Note: (Hamstring) Limited practice Wednesday, full practice Thursday.
20.Adam Thielen MIN at Cle
21.Alshon Jeffery PHI vs. SF

41.Paul Richardson SEA vs. Hou
42.*Willie Snead NO vs. Chi
Note: (Hamstring) Full practice Wednesday. ***Full practice all week, removed from the injury list.***
43.*Golden Tate DET vs. Pit
Note: Dealing with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder, status for this week is questionable. Tate said that he's not sure he'll be ready to play - that he would put it in the coaches and trainers hands. That hardly seems optimistic to me. ***Limited practice Friday - according to Adam Schefter and unnamed source, he's expected to play Sunday night, but the danger is obvious here.***
44.Zay Jones BUF vs. Oak
45.Brandon LaFell CIN vs. Ind
46.*JuJu Smith-Schuster PIT at Det

79.*Emmanuel Sanders DEN at KC
Note: (Ankle) Listed as day-to-day. The Broncos play Monday night, so the first meaningful practice information won't come until Thursday or Friday at the earliest. Did not practice Thursday. ***Did not practice all week, a true game-time decision.***
80.*Martavis Bryant PIT at Det
Note: Doubled-down on his 'play me or trade me' stance after another big win, and then missed Monday's mandatory meeting with an illness. Moved to the scout team in practice. Maybe he'll end up getting traded after all.
81.*Mike Wallace BAL vs. Mia
Note: Left with a concussion in the first quarter on Sunday and remains in the protocol, though he had a limited practice Tuesday.
82.*DeVante Parker MIA at Bal

15.Zach Miller CHI at NO
16.Seth DeValve CLE vs. Min
17.Jack Doyle IND at Cin
18.Vernon Davis WAS vs. Dal
Note: Davis has remained active even with Reed getting back into the mix - both tight ends are used frequently, at the expense of the wide receivers.

20.David Njoku CLE vs. Min
Note: Both of Njoku's catches (for 58 yards) came with Kessler at QB.
21.George Kittle SF at Phi
22.O.J. Howard TB vs. Car
Note: Scouting report ought to read - 'Very dangerous when left wide open.'
23.*Jesse James PIT at Det
Note: Might get a few more targets because Vance McDonald (knee) is at risk of missing this week.
