NFL Reactions: Week 8

This article is part of our NFL Reactions series.

-You probably didn't have much of a shot this week if your opponent had Dalvin Cook, who propelled the Vikings to an upset victory at Lambeau Field with 30 carries for 163 yards and three touchdowns, plus two catches for 63 yards and a fourth touchdown on three targets. Cook almost single-handedly dictated Minnesota's win Sunday. Wind and Jaire Alexander helped limit Adam Thielen (three catches for 27 yards on four targets) and Justin Jefferson (three catches for 26 yards on four targets).

-Aaron Rodgers was decent enough (27-of-41 for 291 yards and three touchdowns), especially given the wind, but his number of viable pass-catching options remained limited despite facing a weak and battered Minnesota corner rotation. Davante Adams was a huge success for his fantasy investors (seven catches for 53 yards and three touchdowns on 12 targets), but his usage was less than efficient. Jamaal Williams (16 carries for 75 yards, six catches for 27 yards on six targets) rode the baseline.

-Jordan Wilkins (20 carries for 89 yards and one touchdown) may have overtaken Jonathan Taylor (11 carries for 22 yards) as Indianapolis' lead back. Wilkins hadn't been much more effective than Taylor when the Colts committed to Wilkins for the rest of the game -- Wilkins had 12 carries for 38 yards at that point -- but he finished strong on those eight subsequent carries.

Wilkins hadn't been much more effective than Taylor when the Colts committed to Wilkins for the rest of the game -- Wilkins had 12 carries for 38 yards at that point -- but he finished strong on those eight subsequent carries.

-Justin Herbert was useful for his fantasy investors against Denver, but he still regressed a bit by completing 29-of-43 attempts for 278 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.Justin Jackson (17 carries for 89 yards, three catches for 53 yards on five targets) was very busy at running back, where Troymaine Pope (10 carries for 67 yards) seemed to pull even or ahead of Joshua Kelley (seven carries for 32 yards).

-After a rough first half, Drew Lock got himself organized to finish stronger and lead the Broncos to a last-second win over the Chargers, completing 26-of-41 passes for 248 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Noah Fant was very busy (seven catches for 47 yards on nine targets), but Albert Okwuegbunam once again made a strong case for playing time by catching a nine-yard touchdown on his one credited target, while he drew two pass interference penalties on the final drive of the game.

-Jimmy Garoppolo again found the bench in-game after citing ankle issues, his final box score against the Seahawks a dreadful 11-of-16 for 84 yards and one interception. Nick Mullens was the replacement, and he was substantially better at 18-of-25 for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Aiyuk (eight catches for 91 yards and one touchdown on 11 targets) and Kendrick Bourne (eight catches for 81 yards on 10 targets) both worked well with Mullens.

-DK Metcalf carried the Seahawks offense against the 49ers, finishing with 12 receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 15 targets while Tyler Lockett (four catches for 33 yards on five targets) took a backseat. DeeJay Dallas was inefficient but found the end zone twice on a day where the Seahawks just didn't have any other running back options.

-Although the Jets offense was harmless to the Chiefs, Kansas City's poor returns in the ground game (six carries for 21 yards for Clyde Edwards-Helaire, six carries for seven yards for Le'Veon Bell) left Patrick Mahomes no choice but to torch the Jets defense through the air. It was a nearly stress-free day for Mahomes, who completed 31-of-42 passes for 416 yards and five touchdowns in the 35-9 win. The usual suspects did the pass-catching damage -- Travis Kelce led the way with eight catches for 109 yards and one touchdown on 12 targets while Tyreek Hill (four catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns on six targets) and Mecole Hardman (seven catches for 96 yards and one touchdown on nine targets).

-A painful game-clinching fumble tarnished what was prior to then an acceptable showing by Cam Newton against the Bills. Despite missing Julian Edelman and N'Keal Harry, Newton completed 15-of-25 passes for 174 yards while running for 54 yards and a touchdown. Damien Harris was strong on the ground, totaling 102 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries.

-Although Stefon Diggs was close to unstoppable (six catches for 92 yards on nine targets), the Buffalo passing game was otherwise less than ambitious, with Josh Allen finishing 11-of-18 for 154 yards and one interception. Devin Singletary (14 carries for 86 yards) and Zack Moss (14 carries for 81 yards and two touchdowns) did all the lifting otherwise against the Patriots.

-It was a tedious, grinding effort for Ben Roethlisberger (21-of-32 for 182 yards and two touchdowns) against a tough pass defense, and ultimately enough to win against the Ravens. The Steelers' target distribution was odd again -- Chase Claypool (five catches for 42 yards and one touchdown) led the team with nine targets while JuJu Smith Schuster (seven catches for 67 yards) came in second with eight targets. Diontae Johnson only had a six-yard catch on three targets.

-It was somewhat understandable given the opponent and the loss of left tackle Ronnie Stanley to a rough injury, but Lamar Jackson wasn't good enough against Pittsburgh, turning the ball over four times compared to just two passing touchdowns. Marquise Brown (one three-yard touchdown catch on two targets) was disturbingly quiet, but the ground game was lively between J.K. Dobbins (15 carries for 113 yards) and Gus Edwards (87 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries).

-Tua Tagovailoa suffered a sack and fumble on his first pass attempt, courtesy of Aaron Donald, and his box score didn't get much better from there (12-of-22 for 93 yards and one touchdown). It was an understandable outcome – a first start against a tough defense, behind one of the league's worst offensive lines, was putting Tagovailoa in a difficult spot.

-In contrast to Tagovailoa, Jared Goff doesn't really qualify for any excuses on the question of his struggles. He completed only 35-of-61 passes for 355 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, losing two fumbles otherwise. Goff was also comically dependent on Cooper Kupp, who caught only 11 of 21 targets for just 110 yards.

-Derrick Henry (18 carries for 112 yards and one touchdown) and his backups (Jeremy McNichols and D'Onta Foreman) were highly effective on the ground against Cincinnati, but Ryan Tannehill (18-of-30 for 233 yards, two touchdowns and one interception) didn't quite do enough to win. Corey Davis had a big game (eight catches for 128 yards and one touchdown on 10 targets) while A.J. Brown dealt with a down game, catching four of seven targets for only 24 yards and one touchdown.

-Joe Burrow generally struggled as a passer (26-of-37 for 249 yards and two touchdowns) against Tennessee, but he encouragingly took no sacks and only withstood two hits generally. He had been taking a dozen or more hits per game in previous contests. Tee Higgins (six catches for 78 yards on nine targets) is an imminent star and Tyler Boyd (six catches for 67 yards and one touchdown on seven targets) is very good in the meantime. Auden Tate was very effective in this one also, catching seven of seven targets for 65 yards.
