The Buccaneers are going to release Askew, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Askew played in just five games last season after being placed on the non-football injury list following a car accident in which he suffered a neck injury. Askew's contract, combined with the ability of Earnest Graham to play fullback and the addition of Chris Pressley, make Askew less vital to the Buccaneers and therefore expendable.

Askew currently sits atop the Buccaneers' depth chart at FB entering the 2009 season. He is a versitile performer for a FB as he can run, block, and catch the ball out of backfield. The key for Askew in 2009 will be staying healthy as he had some injury problems last season.
Askew was a Pro Bowl first alternate at fullback last season on the strength of his blocking skills, and he's a big asset to the Bucs in that area. However, Askew got zero carries last season, and while he will get two or three pass targets a game, tops, that's not enough to have much fantasy impact even in deeper leagues.
Askew is a very good blocking back. He'll be very valuable to both Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman in the Bucs' offense, but he'll get very, very few carries of his own.
He's only had 24 touches in three pro seasons, but perhaps we'll see a spike in those numbers with Jerald Sowell out of the picture. Entering training camp, Askew projects as the No. 1 fullback on the club.
Askew will backup starter Jerald Sowell.
Played in all 16 games during his rookie season in 2003, seeing the bulk of his time on special teams. Askew also carried the ball twice for nine yards as the backup fullback, a role he should continue this season.
The 85th overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft, Askew will be a back-up to Jerrod Sowell and play on special teams.
