The Lions released Pinner on Saturday, the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
His meager 3.3 yards per carry during the preseason didn't do enough for the Lions to hold onto him. Entering the season, Detroit has just two true running backs on the roster, although fullback Jerome Felton is currently considered the team's No. 3 running back.

Pinner will need to impress early in camp to be in the mix for carries in the Detroit backfield, but will likely be utilized in a special teams capacity.
Pinner is the team's fourth best running back, entering the season behind Chester Taylor, Adrian Peterson and Mewelde Moore and the depth chart. But if injuries allow him to see the field, he could do some damage, evidenced by his week 13 performance (125 rushing yards and three touchdowns).
Pinner will be among the handful of running backs that serve as a backup to Kevin Jones. Rookie Brian Calhoun stands as the most likely to receive feature back status if Jones goes down, and Pinner, who weighs in at 235 pounds, could see a nice amount of short yardage action.
Pinner got a couple starts in absence of Kevin Jones last season. He is third in the pecking order this year behind both Jones and Shawn Bryson, and will not make an impact in fantasy unless they succumb to injury.
The starting running back job appears to be Kevin Jones' to lose, though Pinner will push the rookie. The Lions drafted Pinner in the fourth round in 2003 but he saw limited action last season because of a broken leg. He's healthy once again but questions will remain about his durability until he proves otherwise. Shawn Bryson and Olandis Gary are also in the mix, which could cut down Pinner's opportunities.
A rookie from Kentucky, Pinner is likely to start the season on the PUP list and miss at least the first six games of the season. He's got little chance at significant playing time for the 2003 season.
