Hart struggled in his second season as the starting strong safety in 2008. After recording five interceptions in 2007, he did not have any last year, and his tackles dropped by about 25%. This year he seems on his way to losing his starting job to Steve Gregory unless he can regain the confidence of his coaches during training camp.
In his first year as a starter, Hart compiled 82 tackles and five interceptions in 2007. He formed a formidable secondary duo with teammate Antonio Cromartie, who led the NFL with 10 picks. Cromartie's presence helps ensure that Hart will receive chances to make plays. Hart has always been a good tackler (48 in 2006 and 45 in 2005 as a part-time player), and he has eight interceptions in the past two seasons (remember, only one as a starter). There's a lot to like about Hart, who is a versatile safety and apparently a late bloomer (he will turn 31 in July).
Hart will battle rookie Eric Weddle for the starting spot at strong safety. Hart probably has the inside track since he has five years of game experience to draw one. Though he played primarily as a reserve last season, he still managed to come up with three interceptions.
Hart has been a sometimes starter throughout his two year stint with San Diego, but a job with the first string is not assured. He will probably enter the season as the backup strong safety.
Hart is on the roster as a backup free safety, though he doesn't figure to get much playing time.
Hart will serve as Brian Dawkins' backup at the free safety position. However, if Dawkins is unable to play, Hart has proved he can make a solid contribution. In nine games last year, Hart made 61 tackles as the Eagles posted a 7-2 record in those games.
Going into training camp Hart will back up Pro Bowl FS Brain Dawkins. Hart is young and unproven so it may not be his job for long.
