The Colts have released Phillips, the Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Added by the Colts this past November in the hope that he would bolster the team's pass rush, Phillips -- who was slated to earn $2.55 million in 2015 -- recorded just five tackles and no sacks during his five-game stint with Indy. Prior to that, he notched 19 tackles and two sacks in 11 games with the Titans.

Despite his advanced age, Phillips continues to put up solid sack totals. After reaching 9.5 for the Chargers in 2009, Phillips stepped up for the suspended Von Miller last season in Denver by recording 5.5 sacks in the first six weeks of the season. He'd eventually finish with 10, although with only 36 total tackles, his IDP value as a linebacker was fairly limited. He used his one-year success with the Broncos to earn a new contract with the Titans, where he'll primarily be a pass-rusher again. However, his tackle-total isn't expected to skyrocket, so his IDP value will be trumped by plenty of others.
Phillips, who recorded 9.5 sacks last season, gives the Broncos a situational pass rusher to pair up with Von Miller. He could be heavily relied upon early in the season if Miller loses his appeal of a four-game suspension.
Phillips has been the anchor of the San Diego defense for the last several seasons, but he is coming off a down year as he only logged 42 total tackles and 3.5 sacks in 12 games due to a foot injury. He is reportedly healthy heading into 2012 and should see an increase in his numbers across the board.
Like every solid 3-4 outside linebacker, Phillips is worth moving up if your league emphasizes sack production over tackle totals. With 11 sacks last year, Phillips hit double-digits for the second time in his career in 2010, but his total of just 55 tackles (47 solo) resembled numbers typically seen in defensive linemen rather than linebackers. The San Diego pass rusher should be expected to remain a similar player this season and rarely be more than a fringe consideration in most IDP leagues.
Phillips led the league with seven forced fumbles in 2009 and also registered seven sacks. He should benefit from having a more dynamic Shawne Merriman on the opposite end this year.
When Shawne Merriman was lost for the season after just one game last year, Shaun Phillips had to pick up the slack. He responded with 7.5 sacks despite facing more double teams than he had ever seen in his career. In 2009, Phillips should find the goings a little bit easier as the return of Merriman should garner a lot of attention from opposing blockers. Double digit sacks are not out of the question.
Phillips has averaged 8.5 sacks the past four seasons and should continue to put up similar numbers for the Bolts.
He doesn't get as much publicity as fellow outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, but Phillips came into his own in 2006 as he made 65 total tackles and 11.5 sacks. He will look to build on those numbers in 2007.
Phillips will again be a reserve outside linebacker trapped behind the popular Steve Foley and the veteran Randall Godfrey.
Phillips was a reserve as a rookie in 2004, and he probably will not be able to break through to the starting lineup this year either. The Chargers have been using him at linebacker, and they are pretty deep at that position.
Phillips will be a backup outside linebacker in San Diego this season. The team has at least five more established players among the linebacking corps this year.
