After missing all of 2013 with a hamstring injury, a healthy Hayden seemed a step slow during training camp with the Bears. A weak preseason ultimately resulted in his release during the team's final roster cuts. However, after receiver Marquess Wilson was placed on injured reserve/designated to return, the Bears elected to bring back Hayden into their defensive backfield, where a dime back role likely looms.
Hayden was penciled in to return to serve as the Bears' nickel cornerback before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury in training camp. He's since been placed on injured reserve.
Hayden will push Tim Jennings for a starting spot opposite Charles Tillman, but will first have to prove he can stay healthy. If he does, expect a battle to extend throughout training camp for the second corner spot in the lineup.
Hayden was released by the Colts in training camp and it was later revealed he had neck surgery in the offseason that was similar to Peyton Manning's (ACDF, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion). He'll have a reserve role after signing with Atlanta.
Hayden, who is becoming more of a standout player, will start at left cornerback. He had 50 tackles and one interception in only eight starts last season and should improve on those numbers this year. He could be a sleeper IDP pick.
Hayden starts at left cornerback and is a hidden source of tackles with Indy's Cover-2 scheme requiring corners to make tackles against the running game. He missed six games last season with knee and hamstring injuries, but was productive when on the field with 42 tackles and three interceptions - one which he ran back for a touchdown. The Colts thought highly enough of him to make him their highest priority in the offseason and signed him to a five-year deal worth approximately $43 million.
Hayden locked up the second corner spot with his strong play last season. The Colts cover-2 scheme relies on the corners to make a lot of tackles in the running game. After a year as a full-timer, Hayden should be able to top last year's output.
With the departure of Nick Harper and Jason David, Hayden will play a big role in the Colts' secondary this season, likely occupying the second corner spot next to Marlin Jackson. Hayden was considered somewhat of a project when he was drafted out of the second round in 2005, but has developed nicely and coaches are happy. He should be serviceable at the departed corner spot.
Hayden, a converted wideout, is a project, but the Colts will try to mold him into an NFL cornerback.
