Trae Waynes
Trae Waynes
27-Year-Old CornerbackCB
Cincinnati Bengals
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Waynes continues to develop himself into more of a well-rounded cornerback as his career rolls along -- starting 30 games between 2017 and 2018 after logging nine starts during his first two years in the NFL. He also significantly increased his per-year tackle totals of late (109 since 2017, 69 combined in 2015 and 2016), and has racked up a respectable 19 pass deflections opposite Xavier Rhodes over the past two seasons. Set to join Bengals
CBMinnesota Vikings
March 17, 2020
The Bengals are signing Waynes to a three-year, $42 million deal, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The No. 11 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft logged 58 tackles and a pick in 14 games with the Vikings last season. With Waynes set to join the Bengals' secondary, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic suggests that Cincinnati may now elect to part ways with Dre Kirkpatrick.

Waynes seems to have shed the bust label that seemed destined for him after the slow start to his career. In fact, the 2015 first-rounder set a career-high 65 tackles in 2017 while putting together the second of his two consecutive seasons with at least 11 pass breakups. As long as he plays opposite 2017 first-team All-Pro corner Xavier Rhodes, Waynes should continue to receive plenty of attention from opposing quarterbacks, which has the potential to lead to a big year, statistically speaking.
Waynes will likely start at left cornerback with Terence Newman moving to a nickelback or a reserve role.
The 2015 first-round draft pick will compete with Newman for a starting job at cornerback. Waynes will need to reduce his pass interference penalties to win the role as he was slow to adjust to NFL rules last season.
Waynes was selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, 11th overall. He'll compete for a starting cornernback role in training camp, but likely begins the season as the team's nickel back. He has top-shelf speed (4.31-second 40-yard dash) and a lot of experience in a Michigan State defense that emphasizes physicality, so Waynes should have no trouble taking up a press-corner mentality despite his light frame (6-foot, 186 pounds).
