Heart condition forces retirement
DTJacksonville Jaguars
August 16, 2020
Gunter (illness) announced via his personal Twitter account Sunday that he is stepping away from football due to a serious heart condition.
ANALYSIS
Gunter has been diagnosed with an enlarged aorta, a condition which would put his health at serious risk if he were to play football before undergoing an operation. However, the 28-year-old does not currently meet the requirements needed for surgery, which would offer a 50 percent chance of allowing him to retake the field if undergone. As such, Gunter is left with no option but to hang up his cleats. Gunter was expected to play a depth role with the Jaguars in 2020, and across his last five years in Arizona the defensive lineman notched a total of 126 tackles (86 solo) and 11 sacks.

Heart condition potentially deadly
DTJacksonville Jaguars
August 16, 2020
Gunter, who announced his retirement Sunday, was at high risk of serious disability or death if he'd continued playing, Adam Maya of NFL.com reports. "After seeing several heart specialists I was told if I continue to play ball with my condition, I could possibly rupture or tear my aorta which is enlarged," Gunter said. "This can cause sudden death or a severe stroke."
ANALYSIS
Gunter had been on the active/non-football injury list since the start of training camp, and Sunday's announcement shed light as to why. The defensive tackle, who signed with the Jaguars this offseason after spending the first five years of his career in Arizona, added that there was a 50/50 chance of surgery correcting his condition, but that his aorta wasn't quite enlarged enough to qualify for the operation. Gunter is only 28 years old, so if he's able to undergo a successful surgery in the next couple of years and receives subsequent medical clearance, there's ostensibly a chance he can attempt a comeback.

2015 Fantasy Outlook
Selected in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Gunter was an unknown entity out of Delaware State, but his 6-foot-5, 305-pound stature is ideal for a defensive end. The FCS product may need some time to acclimate to the professional ranks, yet he's been afforded the immediate reps behind Pro Bowler Calais Campbell in the early stages of training camp.
