Hill took part in a workout with the 49ers on Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Elijah Mitchell is dealing with an adductor strain, and while the oft-injured running back isn't expected to be sidelined when the regular season begins, San Francisco's other backfield depth options not name Christian McCaffrey are inexperienced. Hill, who last played in the NFL in 2021 for the 49ers, was joined by Duke Johnson, Jeremy McNichols and Jason Huntley at the workout. Whether the Niners add another backup option or not, McCaffrey remains atop the depth chart at RB.

Hill's final season in Atlanta proved to be his best, as he averaged 4.7 yards per carry on career-high volume and helped make Todd Gurley something of an afterthought down the stretch in the Falcons' offense. A physical runner at 6-1 and 219 lbs., Hill has added to his skill set over the years and even emerged as a surprisingly useful pass-catcher in 2020 after managing only 13 receptions in the prior three seasons combined. While he's still not a difference-maker on passing downs, simply not being a liability opens up more paths to playing time, although his volume is likely to be limited this season after he signed with the Titans in May. Should the unthinkable happen and Derrick Henry be lost for any length of time, though, Hill might be a more logical replacement than Darrynton Evans in the lead role for Tennessee, given the team's play action-heavy scheme that needs a between-the-tackles threat to make everything click.
The third-year back racked up 71 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown against New Orleans upon his promotion to the lead role Week 10, but consistent fantasy production eluded him for the remainder of 2019. Hill again was handed the reigns the following two weeks against Carolina and Tampa Bay as Devonta Freeman continued to miss time with a foot injury, but he accumulated just 1.8 yards per carry on 24 attempts and was never entrusted as the starter after that, averaging fewer than six rushes per game Weeks 13 through 17. The acquisition of Todd Gurley hints that Atlanta's front office identified a need for more upside at the position after parting ways with Freeman during the offseason, but Hill is expected to remain involved as a change-of-pace option for Atlanta's RB committee during 2020.
The Falcons front office clearly holds an admiration for Hill's style of play, as supported by the team's willingness to re-acquire him in September following a nearly year-long stint with Cincinnati. A sturdy back at 6-1, 219, Hill appeared in 10 games for Atlanta last season, with all 20 of his carries coming between Weeks 14 and 17. Of his 157 rushing yards, 60 came on a single fourth-quarter run Week 16 against Carolina, but even removing that play he still yielded 5.1 yards per attempt. Granted, Hill's audition didn't afford a large enough sample size to secure him as a dependable second-string option for the Falcons, but he absolutely will compete for a spot on special teams if not the No. 3 running back role.
Hill spent most of his rookie season on the Falcons' practice squad after being taken in the fifth round of the 2017 draft, but was signed by the Bengals off the practice squad in November. In Cincinnati he saw action in six games, mostly on special teams, seeing action on only 19 offensive snaps. He ended up with 11 carries for 37 yards, along with two catches for 36 yards. He's at risk of losing his roster spot after the Bengals took Miami running back Mark Walton in the fourth round this year.
A fifth-round pick in the 2017 draft, Hill will slot in behind one of the most dynamic running back tandems in the league in Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Freeman and Coleman combined for 24 touchdowns last season, but Hill is no stranger to the end zone, either, as he racked up 35 touchdowns in 37 career games at Wyoming. He would be the top candidate to fill in for Coleman or Freeman should one of them suffer an injury. Otherwise, he may find it difficult to earn meaningful touches in his rookie season.
