The Steelers waived Butler (undisclosed) from injured reserve with an injury settlement Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Butler originally reverted to the Steelers' IR after going unclaimed off waivers. The nature of his injury is still unclear, but he will now be free to play again this year once he is back to full health. Since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the pass catcher has suited up for only two regular-season games, both in 2020.

Butler, who thrived with the XFL's St. Louis Battlehawks this spring, signed a contract with the Steelers on Tuesday, ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The big-bodied pass catcher, originally a 2019 fourth-round pick of the Cardinals, posted an impressive 51-599-8 line across 10 regular-season games with St. Louis. Butler was technically used as a tight end at times with the Battlehawks, and his 6-foot-5, nearly 230-pound frame could certainly allow him to be deployed in a variety of creative ways within a Steelers offense that should be even more wide open than during Kenny Pickett's rookie 2022 campaign.

2019
One of three wide receivers in the Cardinals' 2019 draft haul, Butler didn't get a chance to show off his wares as a fourth-round pick, suffering a fractured hand in mid-August that kept him on injured reserve all season. One wonders whether the injury was fortuitous due to issues with drops and his standing with the deep reserves during exhibition season. In any case, rookie second-rounder Andy Isabella also was sparsely used while sixth-round selection KeeSean Johnson earned the fourth-most snaps among Arizona wideouts. Following the offseason addition of DeAndre Hopkins, it's difficult to project consistent work for any of Butler, Isabella, Johnson or Trent Sherfield in a corps that also includes Christian Kirk and Larry Fitzgerald.
Butler is a towering figure at 6-5, 227 pounds with 35 and 1/4-inch arms that afford him an absurd catch radius, yet he boasts above average athleticism even at his oversized build. His 4.48 speed and 128-inch broad jump illustrate the profound downfield threat he poses, and his Iowa State tape features numerous instances of him jumping over and/or running away from defenders. He fell to the fourth round probably due to drop issues, and perhaps concerns about his ability to get a clean release in his NFL routes. His speed is more long than sudden, and at his size he's an easy jam target, so his applicability on short drops is a fair concern. Butler looked like a long-term project even before a preseason hand fracture landed him on IR.
