2020 Fantasy Outlook
If Johnson's chances of making the roster took a hit when Detroit drafted D'Andre Swift in the second round of the draft, they took a beating when it selected Jason Huntley in the fifth. Huntley (5-8, 180) not only has a more explosive skill set than Johnson, but the rookie makes for the fourth running back on the roster, and it doesn't seem like Johnson offers enough to persuade the Lions to carry five. Either way, Johnson doesn't have any obvious paths to fantasy relevance in 2020. Read Past Outlooks

Potentially on roster bubble
RBDetroit Lions
April 29, 2020
Johnson could be on the roster bubble entering the 2020 season, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
Johnson's descent down the depth chart is somewhat surprising, given that he compiled 382 total yards despite playing just 318 snaps as a rookie. However, after the Lions took two running backs in the 2020 NFL Draft -- D'Andre Swift in the second round and Jason Huntley in the fifth -- Johnson's skill set as a multi-tooled athlete may be redundant. Huntley's arrival in particular could spell doom for Johnson, as the New Mexico State product proved to be a capable returner in college while putting together a decent resume as an open-field pass catcher. The two may be in a heated competition for the final running back spot on the depth chart behind Swift, Kerryon Johnson and Bo Scarbrough.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
Johnson was efficient with limited work at the University of Maryland, averaging 7.6 yards on 348 career carries. He got some attention after running a 4.26-second 40-yard dash at his pro day, inspiring the Lions to scoop him up with a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. With Theo Riddick cut at the start of training camp, Johnson has a solid shot to make the 53-man roster for Week 1, potentially serving as a kick returner. He's still a long shot to have any role on offense at the beginning of the regular season.
