2019 Pass/Rush Projections
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Brees' volume fell for the second year in a row last season as the Saints ranked fourth in the league in rushing rate at 46.6 percent, the highest in the Sean Payton era. Brees' 32.6 attempts per game were his fewest as a Saint, but tremendous efficiency allowed him to retain fantasy value. He broke his own NFL record for completion percentage (and now holds four of the five top marks), posted a seven-year-high YPA (6th in NFL) and set a career low in interceptions as a starter, resulting in a
career-high 115.7 passer rating. While Brees is still effective throwing downfield - 46.3 completion rate (2nd) and 16.1 YPA (3rd) on attempts longer than 20 yards - he only went deep on 8.4 percent of his attempts, third lowest among qualified QBs, and his 7.5-yard average depth of target was fourth lowest. (Impressively, though, he was the only qualified QB other than Aaron Rodgers without an interception on downfield throws.) While his overall attempts fell, Brees' red-zone pass attempts increased by 11, helping him produce five more red-zone scores in 2018 than he had the prior year. He'll have to follow the same formula this season, as the Saints - even without the departed Mark Ingram - figure to be run-heavy again with Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray. The team strengthened its pass-catching corps with the signing of TE Jared Cook, who joins WRs Michael Thomas, Ted Ginn and Tre'Quan Smith. This setup should allow the 40-year-old Brees to remain effective, but his upside is limited by a lack of volume and likely regression in red-zone attempts. Read Past Outlooks

Struggles in win
Brees completed 18 of 30 pass attempts for 184 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, losing one yard on his lone rushing attempt in the Saints' 26-18 win over the Falcons on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Brees finished with easily his worst game of the 2019 campaign, failing to pass for at least 200 yards in a full game for the first time all season. Brees also matched a season-low in completion percentage (60) among games that he finished. The veteran signal-caller has played solid football since returning from a thumb injury in Week 8, and it was discouraging to see this kind of performance against a below-average Falcons defense. Things won't get any easier for the quarterback in Week 14 when the Saints face the 49ers in an important NFC showdown.

Brees was as effective as usual last year, if not more so, but a significant drop in volume sunk his fantasy ranking among quarterbacks to its lowest level in 12 years. He led the league in YPA and set the NFL single-season record for completion percentage, but he attempted his fewest passes in a full season since 2005. That he still topped 4,000 yards is impressive. Brees wasn't a dink-and-dunk game manager, either - he threw the ball downfield at a higher rate than usual. Despite 8.5 fewer attempts per game than in 2016, he threw nearly the same number of passes longer than 20 yards (55 to 51), ranking second in the league in completion percentage and fifth in YPA on those attempts. The lack of volume, especially in the red zone, led to his fewest TD passes since 2003 when he played 11 games. Instead of riding Brees' arm, the Saints committed to the run with Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara, who combined for 350 carries. And thanks to a defense that took an unexpected jump from bottom rung to top 10, Brees wasn't forced to air it out. As a result, the Saints rushed on 44.4 percent of their plays, the highest mark in the Sean Payton era, other than in the Super Bowl-winning 2009 season (45.3). After coming within a miracle play of the NFC title game last season with that game plan, expect the same this year. The wild card is the four-game suspension of Ingram. Will Brees pass more in the first month? Either way, the days of 600 attempts appear over for the 39-year-old.
