Griffen missed five games in the 2018 campaign to address concerns regarding his mental health and the defensive end never seemed to get back into a rhythm following his return. The Vikings could have saved over $10 million by releasing the veteran in the offseason, but the team and player managed to work out a restructured contract that would keep Griffen in Minnesota for another season. The 31-year-old averaged almost 11 sacks over the course of the previous four seasons so it's quite possible Griffen could return to pass-rushing prominence with the mental health issue hopefully behind him.
Griffen is a bit too edge-oriented to pile up big tackle numbers, but few pass rushers are as feared. Missing one game and playing the entire second half with a torn plantar fascia, Griffen still posted a career-high 13 sacks last year on just 795 snaps. An elite athlete surrounded by a talented front seven, Griffen should stay hot at least a couple more years after just turning 30 in December. He's worth ranking higher in leagues where sacks are at a premium.
One of the league's most athletic players, Griffen possesses 4.60 speed on a 6-3, 270-pound frame. It makes him a dangerous edge rusher -- he has 30.5 sacks the last three years -- and he is good for about 50 tackles. The best-case scenario for Griffen in 2017 would be for the Vikings to give him a bigger play count at the expense of 34-year-old Brian Robison, who logged 836 snaps last year but could see his workload decrease. Griffen played fewer than 900 snaps each of the last two years, and it would make a big difference if he could get to 1,000.
Griffen is one of the verified freaks of defensive lineman, possessing 4.6 speed at over 270 pounds. He's also a very good defensive end in general, boasting double-digit sacks in consecutive seasons heading into 2016. He has 22.5 sacks in his last 1,832 snaps, meaning he should safely project to double-digit sacks in 2016 so long as he plays 900 snaps. There's not much reason to think he won't, as veteran Vikings end Brian Robison is due to lose snaps after logging 897 in 2015.
At 6-3, 273, Griffen is one of the league's elite athletes with a 4.65 40. But his potential was not unleashed until new coach Mike Zimmer arrived last season. Griffen's play count rose to a career-high 967 last year — 306 more than in 2013 — and he came through with double-digit sacks in his first year as a starter. He should once again lead the defensive line in snaps, and his per-snap production in recent years should ensure he's not a one-hit wonder.
Griffen is among the riskier players in this range since he wasn't a high draft pick and heads into his first year as a starter, but the Vikings handed him a five-year, $42.5 million contract this offseason, which would seem to imply that they intend to work him to the bone in 2014. He has 4.65 wheels at 273 pounds, and he totaled 27 tackles and 5.5 sacks while playing roughly two-thirds of Minnesota's snaps in 2013. With Jared Allen gone to Chicago, more sacks should be up for grabs, and Griffen ought to push for around 1,000 snaps.
Griffen will give the Vikings depth at DE in 2013.
Griffen will be used at outside linebacker in training camp and will likely play most of his snaps at the position this season. He'll be a reserve linebacker and may only play on passing downs.
A late pick at defensive end, Griffin has potential, but will start the season as a reserve.
