Past Fantasy Outlooks
Khaira produced 10 points, 136 hits and an unsightly minus-19 rating in 64 games last year. He didn't score a goal over the last 36 regular-season contests, a stretch in which he occasionally served as a healthy scratch. Head coach Dave Tippett will want Khaira in the lineup for his grit and physical play, but he isn't strong on offense or defense. His career high in points is 21, set in 2017-18, and he has a career minus-39 mark in 218 outings. Khaira is expected to compete with Gaetan Haas for the fourth-line center job, but it's unlikely Khaira will make enough of an impact in 2020-21 to interest fantasy managers.
The 2018-19 season saw Khaira appear in 60 contests, a year after playing 69 games as a rookie. In his sophomore season, Khaira scored three goals and finished with 18 points while averaging 12:34 per night. The 6-foot-4 winger certainly brings size to Edmonton's forward group, having racked up 251 hits combined over the past two seasons. But offensively, Khaira offers very little, and because of that, he won't be of much use in fantasy.
In his first season playing exclusively with the Oilers, Khaira went through his fair share of growing pains. He surpassed the 20-point milestone (11 goals, 10 assists) in 69 games, but closed out the 2017-18 season by scoring a single point in the final 12 contests. The young center delivered 128 hits but only collected 39 blocks. While it was encouraging to see Khaira set a career high for ice time (12:42), he'll need more experience to be trusted in 2018-19.
The big winger has yet to elbow out a consistent NHL role with the Oilers. Over the last two seasons, the 23-year-old has played 25 games while accumulating just one goal and two assists. This could be a breakthrough year for him, but his upside is a bottom six role.
Khaira had is first taste of professional hockey last season by playing six regular-season and three playoff games for AHL Oklahoma City after playing out his season in the WHL. He drained his first pro goal in the postseason and looks to add to that tally in Oklahoma City this year. He's a distance from the NHL, so don't bother monitoring him yet.
