Enters retirement with defeat

November 6, 2021
Villante lost to Chris Barnett via TKO (strikes) at 2:23 of Round 2 at UFC 268 on Saturday in New York City.
ANALYSIS
Villante announced earlier in the week he would be retiring following this bout, and like many of his prior UFC fights, this one was an unmitigated disaster. Gian actually won Round 1, although neither man did much of anything. The tide turned in Round 2 when Barnett clocked him with a head kick and fired off some additional strikes to get the stoppage. Villante joined the UFC in April 2013. A former All-American collegiate football player and wrestler at Hofstra, Villante was a high-level athlete with legitimate stopping power. Yet, for some reason, he never implemented his wrestling game or athleticism in MMA, instead preferring to fight as a one-dimensional brawler. The 36-year-old finishes his UFC run with a 7-11 mark, including defeats in his past four bouts. His most notable victory with the company was a knockout of Corey Anderson back in April of 2015.

HeavyweightOther
November 4, 2021
Villante is expected to retire after his UFC 268 matchup against Chris Barnett, Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Villante is currently riding a three-fight losing streak but finds himself as roughly a (-130) betting favorite for Saturday's bout at Madison Square Garden. Now 36 years old and already with 30 pro fights under his belt, he'll get a chance to hang up the gloves in his home state.
Draws Chris Barnett at UFC 268

Villante will fight Chris Barnett in a heavyweight bout at UFC 268 in November, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Villante has lost his first two fights in the heavyweight division, as a lack of technical skill has held him back. He'll have a five-inch height advantage and an extra inch of reach against Barnett, but it remains to be seen if he'll capitalize on it.
Struggles continue in Vegas

December 5, 2020
Villante lost to Jake Collier via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC on ESPN 19 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It's the same old story for Villante. Blessed with elite physical gifts, Villante refuses to do anything other than stand and bang with his opposition. It had been that way for years when he was competing at middleweight and nothing has changed in his first two bouts up at heavyweight. Villante has one of the very best chins in the entire company but displays zero footwork and has long had poor cardio. Simply put, Collier outworked him in this fight. Now 35 years old, Villante's UFC run, and MMA career in general, has been a massive disappointment. The Long Island native has now lost three in a row and is just 2-6 in his past eight bouts dating back to March 2017.

The Nevada Athletic Commission announced Monday that Villante was suspended 180 days after sustaining a left hand injury in his submission loss to Maurice Greene at UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
