Announces retirement from tennis

Barty (rest) announced her retirement from professional tennis via her personal Instagram account Tuesday.

Barty recently sat out Indian Wells and Miami for rest purposes, and she's now decided to end her professional tennis career while still ranked as the world No. 1. "I'm so grateful to everything that tennis has given me. It's given me all of my dreams, plus more," Barty said. "But I know that the time is right for me to step away and chase other dreams." The Australian, who turns 26 years old in April, is fresh off a victory at the Australian Open in January and has 15 career singles titles, including three Grand Slams, and has spent most of the past three years as the top-ranked player in the world. Barty took an indefinite break from tennis late in 2014 only to return in 2016, but it remains to be seen whether she returns to the sport this time around.
