2023 Fantasy Outlook
Beathard spent the past two seasons as Jacksonville's backup quarterback, and he'll be back again for 2023 after he inked a two-year, $4.5 million extension during the offseason. He's appeared in six games for the Jaguars and has completed nine of 13 passes with no touchdowns and one interception. Trevor Lawrence took a major step forward in his sophomore campaign and is entrenched as the starter, with the only other quarterback on the roster being Nathan Rourke, who last played in the CFL. Beathard's role as Lawrence's primary backup is safe. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Expected to compete with Jones
Beathard is expected to compete with Mac Jones -- who is slated to be traded from the Patriots to the Jaguars -- to be Trevor Lawrence's top backup in 2024, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Beathard is in the final year of a two-year, $4.5 million contract that he signed prior to last season. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, part of the Jaguars' motivation for the deal is that Beathard has been banged up at times during his stint with the team, with Jones -- a 2021 first-rounder -- giving the team a healthy backup option with plenty of starting experience ahead of the coming season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could see second straight start
Beathard could be in line for a second straight start in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Titans with Trevor Lawrence listed as questionable for the game due to his shoulder injury, Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Beathard played a game-manager role with great efficiency in Week 17 against the Panthers -- a game that marked the first absence of Lawrence's career -- completing 17 of 24 passes for 178 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and adding 24 rushing yards. If he does reprise his starting role Sunday, Beathard could have the benefit of working with Christian Kirk, who's a candidate to be reinstated to the active roster Saturday after missing the last four games on injured reserve with a core muscle injury.

The 28-year-old joined the Jaguars on a two-year deal in March of 2021 and attempted only two passes while serving as the team's backup quarterback. Trevor Lawrence endured a difficult rookie campaign but remains the clear starter, so Beathard is poised to fill the same role in 2022, assuming they both remain healthy. 2020 sixth-round pick Jake Luton and rookie UDFA EJ Perry are the only other quarterbacks on Jacksonville's roster in the wake of the 2022 NFL Draft, leaving Beathard with plenty of job security.
